Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Thursday that people who die of the Covid-19 infection are martyrs (shaheed), and also said that their burial does not need kafan (shroud) or ghusl (cleansing). He also added that one must immediately offer janazah and carry out the burial in presence of a few people.
This came after the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) had issued a circular saying that all victims of COVID-19 irrespective of their religion should be cremated to stop the spread of infection. But, the religious feelings of a few are going to cost the lives of more people if the proper steps of cremation are not followed as the virus spread is a major risk.
Jis insaan ka inteqaal waba ki wajah se hota hai, Islam mein uska darja shaheed ka hota hai. Shuhadah ko ghusl aur kafan ki zaroorat nahi hoti aur unhein jald se jald dafan kiya jaana chahiye https://t.co/lmQJxf30cZ

The move from the Municipal corporation was because one of the religious heads had brought to the notice about the densely populated areas where the Muslim and Christian burial grounds are present and this can pose a risk of spread of infection. The order was revised a bit later with a condition that the burial should be allowed only if the burial ground is big enough and this will reduce the possibility of the spread of the virus.
While the comments do not align with the nation-wide measures being taken to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 infection, Asaduddin Owaisi also mentioned that it is shameful to give the Coronavirus infection a communal angle linking it with the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz meet.
Speaking to ANI over the phone Owaisi said, “I condemn that Islam is being blamed for the situation in the country now. Disease or plague has no religion, but some media outlets which blindly defend the government, BJP and Prime Minister have given coronavirus a religion.” He also said that all the people who attended the meet are cooperating with the government in Telangana as well as in Andhra Pradesh.
